Today I am grateful for step-dads. They are the unsung heroes of “blended” families. They are asked to not only be there for kids that came into their life by another dad, they are asked discipline them, protect them, get pissed at them, be fair with them, accept them and love them.
Many, many men are good dads. Most men who have children are good dads, with some being better than others, but it is the rare, exceptional man who can slip into being a step-dad and do the job so perfectly that the step-kids love him like their own flesh and blood. If you are also a step-dad. . .or know someone who is, pat them on the back. The role is not an easy one to fill.
The good ones do it with kindness, grace and humor. That’s what my husband, John did. We are so lucky to have him.
